Name: Klaus Mikaelson

Canon: Vampire Diaries-verse
Canon Point: The Originals, 5.13 “When the Saints Go Marching In”

Age: 1,000+ (actual) / mid-20s (physical)
Appearance: »»

History: »»

Personality:
Positive Trait: Storge — Of all Klaus' positive traits, it is his enduring storge (love for family) that guides him towards kindness and understanding. While he often claimed family and love in general to be weakness, he just as frequently found reason to be caring and merciful for their sake. He has told Elijah, “We do not feel, and we do not care.” (TVD, 2.19 "Klaus") Centuries later, he tells his brother Kol, “Family is power.” (TO, 2.13) In many ways this development has been spurred by fatherhood, and through such, learning selflessness and unconditional love, but the basis of his devotion has always had roots in his love for his siblings. After his daughter's birth, he cultivates his relationships with his brothers, particularly with Kol, who he has always dismissed or condemned, depending on the day; releases Rebekah from his side after centuries of demanding her loyalty; and faces the consequences of his past sins by sacrificing himself to Marcel for his family's survival. At the series' end, he again sacrifices his life for his daughter, Hope.

Negative Trait: AngerAnger has played a large role in the vicious cycle of Klaus' negative traits, inducing him to lash out ruthlessly to enemies, lovers, friends, family, and everyone unfortunate enough to be in his way. Any perceived betrayal is punished: He incapacitates his younger brother Kol by a magical dagger multiple times for his reckless behavior and for conspiring against Klaus’ tyranny. In his younger sister Rebekah’s case, Klaus "protects her from herself," including but not limited to slaughtering her romantic interests out of fear of her abandonment. He has also incapacitates Rebekah with a magical dagger, sometimes for centuries, because she expressed desire to leave or disobey him.

Negative Trait: Paranoia — To trust is by far one of the hardest things Klaus can do, which is why he very rarely does. As a child of abuse, chased for a thousand years by his murderous father, he is paranoid of everyone and everything, including and especially those closest to him. After learning of Hayley's pregnancy, he keeps her under house arrest to protect her and their child from his enemies, but also to isolate her and prevent her from betraying him. When despite all his efforts, Hayley decides to marry Jackson and lead the bayou's werewolf packs, Klaus nearly kills Jackson in order to protect the secret of their daughter's survival: again, to thwart any possible or perceived threat. His paranoia is also exemplified in his constant scheming and manipulation: for instance, when first arriving in New Orleans, he immediately sets about overthrowing the rule of Marcel, his so-called friend.

Negative Trait: Impulsive — While Klaus' backup plans often have backup plans, his impulsivity describes the reactionary nature of all his decisions, thoughts, and plans. Klaus is always reacting to the pain or some sort that he feels: his impulsivity, anger, and paranoia are usually, but not always, the result of that pain. For instance, he impulsively bites and poisons Caroline out of the anger he feels for his brother's death, Tyler's deceptions, and Caroline's scathing denial to his request to be released. This decision serves him as it gives him leverage to be released from magical confinement, but it is a result of his impulsive need to punish and control. Similarly, he later bites Davina when she taunts him for being "weak", just as his father called him: he is triggered into rage by the word, and also irritated by her constant interruptions of his schemes.

Powers and Abilities:
As an Original (one of the first vampires) and the first vampire/werewolf hybrid, Klaus has these abilities:
  • immortality (immune to all illnesses, toxins, poisons and disease)

  • superior strength in comparison to humans, vampires, Original vampires, werewolves, and other hybrids (able to snap necks, pick up cars, overpower dozens of vampires with moderate difficulty, etc.)

  • superior speed/agility (cover short distances in an instant)

  • accelerated healing/extreme durability (fully recover from all fatal wounds, broken bones, etc.)

  • heightened physical senses (keen senses of hearing, sight, and smell that far exceed that of humans and other vampires/werewolves)

  • mind compulsion (control human and vampire minds/actions and alter/erase memories, but not the minds of werewolves, witches, or other Original vampires)

  • dream manipulation (ability to produce and manipulate dreams)

  • tactile telepathy (Original vampires are able to display their memories in other beings through touch and also seek out and take memories/information from others also through touch)

  • transformation control (the ability to transform into wolf form at will and perform partial transformations, manifesting single features of their wolf forms i.e. a hybrid can display both sets of vampire and werewolf fangs, change eye color to their wolf form, grow their claws, etc.)

  • werewolf bite (a hybrid’s bite is fatal to regular vampires and has the ability to sicken/disorient Original vampires for a few days)

  • healing blood (Klaus' blood is the only cure for a werewolf/hybrid bite; it also has healing properties for humans like all other vampire blood in this canon)

  • daytime walking (due to their werewolf heritage hybrids are capable of walking around in the day without the use of a daylight ring)
